The joyful power of playing with units

A workshop about form, playfulness, and hand-thinking

Focusing on the iconic element of the unit and assembly-based practices in art making, this course is for participants who are open to engaging with a multitude of materials and techniques, and who wish to unleash their creativity by composing three-dimensional works using multiple and repetitive elements and building patterns.

Day 1 of the workshop begins with an introduction of various examples of assembly-based practices in art. The participants will then start evaluating their options and sketching down ideas according to the materials available and assembly techniques chosen. They might start building their models and prepare for day 2.

During the second day, the participants will create their own compositions, they will experiment and play with the assembly potential of their creations, and work towards their final work’s presentation.

The course is open to all art enthusiasts who want to try to break down the traditional idea of medium in art by creating their own working unit and, from that point, start exploring how multiple units behave together while in flexible or rigid structures, bi-dimensional or multi-dimensional spaces.

This experimental course is for participants who are not afraid to start small and grow as far as available time, materials, and creativity will allow. There is a strong element of improvisation intrinsic to this course, make sure you are open to that and excited by it.

The course will be taught in English, but the use of conversational Dutch is guaranteed.
