In this course you will learn how to navigate acrylics as a medium for painting using an exploration-based approach. In class we will focus on creativity and the joy of the creative process without a need for extensive technical knowledge. Fundamental techniques will be explored intuitively. Some of what you can expect in this course will be making quick sketches to experiment with strokes and textures, exploring abstract works with a focus on freedom of expression, studying light and shadow in landscapes, and layering and blending through still-life painting.
English
MK24 offers a range of courses and workshops in the field of visual arts and multimedia.
Painting with oil paints
Oil painting is an ancient technique, but still full of life and rich in possibilities. Step by step, you will be guided in making this technique your own. Lots of attention will be given to the various possibilities, such as glazing, wet in wet, thick over thin, alla prima, impasto and working with a palette knife. Dependent on the assignment, you will work on a painting once or multiple times.
Please note: This class is taught in Dutch, but the instructor will translate into English if it’s requested.
Ceramics course: In the Course of Things
We start with doing almost nothing! The moment of “doing nothing” becomes the foundation of your creativity. In the group we will play some games. Observation on the spot will eventually lead you to create the image. Your power of observation is the most effective tool you will learn to use in this course. You will first be surprised by what is possible before you come up with a plan, which you’ll use to create your sculpture of ceramics.
Please note: This class is taught in Dutch but the instructor will translate into English or German if it’s requested.
Analog Photography Course
A course in analog photography. We’ll be working in our dark room with Durst enlargers for small and medium format cameras.
Please note: This class is taught in Dutch but the instructor will translate into English if it’s requested.
Sculpting in stone
Sculpting is much older than the road to Rome and at the same time always relevant. It is a combination of craft, spatial insight, creativity and a lot of guts! You start with a piece of stone and arrive at a beautiful sculpture. An exciting route where anything can happen along the way, a project that is all yours from beginning to end. Willem has, from his own practice as an artist, much experience and guides you and the group during this adventure towards your work of art.
Please note: This class is taught in Dutch, but the instructor will translate into English if it’s requested.
Sculpting in Stone (Thursday)
Creating beauty with quality
Sculpture is as old as mother earth. First functional and for many centuries also a favorite material in art. To think that stone has always been a silent witness to our history.
Sculpting is the sum of learning the craft, learning to look and think three-dimensionally, having confidence in the working process and experiencing the peace and pleasure that working in stone brings, in addition to the stone itself.
Please note: This class is taught in Dutch, but the instructor will translate into English or Italian if it’s requested.
Exploring Ceramics: Form and Function
Immerse yourself in the art of ceramics with Hildrun (they/them) in this comprehensive course designed for both beginners and advanced learners. Whether you’re new to clay or seeking to refine your skills, this class offers an inclusive and supportive environment where creativity thrives. Engage in the hands-on practice of different hand-building techniques, guided by a professional ceramist passionate about slow craftsmanship.
Experimenting in the Darkroom
Embrace the process
This 6-session workshop focuses on experimentation in the darkroom. We will look at what happens in the darkroom when we go off the beaten path and let the different techniques we’ll use, with chemistry and light, surprise us.
This is not a course in which you’ll learn to print a photograph in a traditional way. Each class begins with an explanation of a particular technique and with looking at work by well-known photographers who have experimented with these techniques. Of course, we will also look at each other’s work.
IMPORTANT For this course, you will need photographic light-sensitive paper designed for use in a darkroom. It doesn’t have to be new; in fact, old or expired light-sensitive paper is even better. We embrace the process, including the happy accidents that come with it.
Please note: This class is taught in Dutch, but the instructor will translate into English if it’s requested.
Prints & Patterns
Patterns are common in nature, mathematics, abstract ideas, and art and design. An enormous variety can be observed in complexity and colors, with one apparent characteristic: repetition.
Please note: This class is taught in Dutch, but the instructor will translate into English if it’s requested.
Model and expression
The human figure as the bearer of expression. This course offers a special dialogue between model and drawer with as the subject: the expression of body language. During the lessons the impartiality of the creative process is central. You will work towards your own style and practice with different drawing materials and techniques.
Tempo, format, music, and exciting poses help the students to work from their own feelings.
Please note: This class is taught in Dutch, but the instructor will translate into English if it’s requested.
Ceramics Workshop
During these two days, you will learn and refine hand modeling techniques in clay. The intensive format of the program gives you the space to delve deeply into the constructive aspects of ceramics. In a creative and motivating environment, you will learn more about the behavior of clay walls, how to achieve new forms, how to control moisture and how to manage shrinkage and gravity.
The invitation is to create objects in a broad variety. The pieces can be sculptural or utilitarian.
MKstart, a preparatory year
MKstart is a private training which will prepare you for a study in the arts and design.
All the teachers are professional artists and designers with a lot of experience in their respective fields. You’ll be working in a group with a maximum of 15 students so you’ll receive a lot of one on one attention.
Please note: The classes during this year are taught in Dutch, but the instructors will translate into English if it’s requested.
