The Fiction Painter

Jón B.K. Ransu’s course requires a bit of homework prior to the start, and each participant will be sent a set of instructions in advance.

Over the five days of this workshop, which combines research, creative writing, and painting, students will invent a fictional painter from any period in history and write a short biography containing not just practical information about the painter, but personal history as well, the more interesting the better.

Ceramics with Clay and Sand

Techniques for Sculpting using Sand

Shaping and molding ceramic objects using sand is the main objective of this course. Ceramic works, such as sculptures and reliefs, that would not be possible using clay alone are indeed possible when combining the clay with sand. There are shapes that can only be created using sand, which come out of the kiln with an exact accuracy of form.

Exploring Sculpture

This course is tailored to fit whatever each participant would like to create, with the teacher offering everything needed to facilitate the individual projects of each student.

Beginning his sessions with ideas, he asks such pertinent questions as, what is sculpture, what meaning does it have today, and where is sculpture as a medium headed? He encourages students to reflect on how the visual compares with language and mathematics as part of creating their work, and gives thoughts and ideas equal importance with the act of sculpting itself.

Sculpting in Marble

Open to both beginners and experienced sculptors, this course starts off with a general introduction to the methods and materials used in marble work, and continues with lessons in both the theory and practice of sculpting in every aesthetic form and style.

In the first session each student will choose a piece of marble that best fits their idea, and then throughout the sessions, learn essential sculpting techniques and the nature of marble. Specific instruction will be given on how to use one’s body as a sculpting tool, on abstract beauty and its elements, and on anatomy and body structure as well as facial development.

Experimental Photo and Video

Taking a novel approach to image making—destroying and generating images, losing and regaining color, creating dreamlike beings—this course requires no expensive devices, but students are asked to bring their favorite camera and an ordinary laptop to class. Free, open-source programs for Windows, Linux and Mac are used for both photography and videography.
